Ways to Boost Your Fiber Intake
According
to the National Cancer Institute, we should eat at least
25 to 35 grams of fiber each day. The average American,
however, consumes only 11 grams. To make sure you don’t
come up shy, follow these tips.
| 1 |
Toss
kidney beans, garbanzos or other varieties into your
salads |
| 2 |
Sprinkle
wheat germ or bran on your favorite hot or cold cereal. |
| 3 |
Use
whole wheat flour whenever possible in your cooking
and baking. |
| 4 |
Choose
whole grain breads, cereals, and crackers. |
| 5 |
Eat
at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each
day. |
| 6 |
When
possible, opt for whole fruits and vegetables rather
than their juices. |
| 7 |
Stir
chopped dried fruits into your cookies, muffins and
breads before baking. |
| 8 |
Choose
cereals with a minimum of five grams of fiber per serving. |
| 9 |
Cook
brown rice rather that white rice. |
| 10 |
Choose
fiber rich snacks such as popcorn, raw vegetables with
a reduced-fat dip or whole grain crackers with reduced-fat
cheese. |
